Using Tarot to Overcome Phobias
This year, many people will be confronting needle phobia as around the world the COVID vaccine is rolled out. I really dreaded the moment I’d be having mine - I’ve had a fear of needles my whole life. My last injection was my travel vaccination 4 years ago. I fainted and ended up with a peak in my anxiety for months afterwards.
They say that the best way to get over a phobia is exposure to what it is you fear. This is such a difficult step to take. So to help me confront my fear and go for my jab, I asked my tarot cards for guidance. I got the 8 of pentacles, Strength, and Judgement.
It was easy to know what the strength card was telling me: ‘you are stronger than you know.’ But the other 2-cards weren’t so clear to me. (It’s a lot harder to read tarot cards for yourself than it is when reading for others!) I held the image of the strength card in my mind during my visit to the vaccination centre, and everything went fine! It became clear to me afterwards what all 3 cards were trying to tell me.
A lot has changed in those 4 years since my last bad experience with a vaccination. I’ve worked on improving my mental health, I’ve become attuned to Reiki, I do yoga, tarot, meditation... I’ve built up so much inner strength and fortitude, it really has felt like a life’s work! That’s what the 8 of pentacles is about - putting in the work. Working away at my inner being in order to improve my situation. And the judgement card appears to remind you that you are being called to do something or face up to something. I was being asked to make a choice or take an action that would change my life and lead to renewal and an awakening.
Tarot is so encouraging and reassuring. It’s really reminded me of how far I’ve come and that the energy I’ve invested in my development has been worthwhile. Getting over a phobia is such a huge accomplishment. If you need help committing to improving your well being and quality of life, Tarot could be a useful tool to turn to.
